Sometimes things that are meant to happen do just happen. We can call it Serendipity, we can call it happenstance, we can call it fate or we can call it destiny but better yet let's just call it 2Steel Girls. You see once upon a time in a land called YouTube, some talent scouts were hunting far and wide for some talented folks to be on their TV show and they happened upon a music video of 2Steel Girls. Because of that video, the ladies were contacted by show producers and invited to audition for the singing competition show, “The Voice.”
They made it through several preliminary auditions and then through the blind audition and then onto the weekly televised shows. It had all happened so suddenly and magically and it has been a wild roller coaster ride for not just the mom and daughter but for the whole family. Since then they have had national exposure not only on The Hallmark Channel but also on the Today Show where they debuted their single, “Train Wreck,” a few months ago right before Mother's Day.
Today this mother and daughter team celebrate the release of their very first brand new CD entitled Train Wreck. I spoke to this Allison, the Mom in this duo recently and this is what she had to say:
Q Hi Alison, so tomorrow is the big CD release for the general public right?
A Right, the official CD Release is tomorrow and the CD Release Party is the following Saturday so that would be August 15th at Puckett’s in Columbia, Tennessee.
Q Oh okay, all right but you have already leased it to your Kickstarter backers? Tell me a little bit about your Kickstarter project?
A Well the Kickstarter was in February and we were trying to raise around $7,000 and we ended up raising 150% which I think it was we raised around $10,500 and that was really cool.
Q Yahoo!!
A Yeah and that was really awesome. Our CD cost us a lot more than that but hey we raised a good portion of it so it was awesome and it is wonderful to have that fan support. It really means a lot. We couldn’t have done it without the fans and Kickstarter honestly. Everything right now that we earn musically we put right back into our band and our music so it is very expensive right now just starting out. It’s like starting up a new business I guess.
Q It absolutely is. That’s exactly what it’s like.
A Ah hah.
Q It’s a lot of work and it’s a lot of commitment in every way, emotionally, mentally, physically, financially.
A Yeah it’s crazy and what’s funny is, everybody in our family, me, Krystal, Aaron and Todd, all four of us you know we put our money together all the time just to make it happen. We are independent and shopping for a label and we are doing everything ourselves. It is getting crazy and we have had a few people just in to help us here and there which has been a great relief but our next step is to find us a really good manager and someone to kind of take that over with more connections than what we have. We will be doing some showcases to try and get a label and investors.
Q Well you know people think that you know it doesn’t happen the old fashioned way anymore where you just get discovered by a record label and they pay for everything. Not in this economy. It doesn’t happen that way anymore and I don’t think people realize that. Record labels are only picking up artists that have already built in fan bases, and investors. It’s a tough journey and it’s a tough road and it seems like everything has to be in the right place in order for everything to happen all at once. Now you definitely have a leg up on a lot of people because you have the national exposure with The Voice.
A Yeah, with The Voice and then we had the Hallmark Channel we did the Home and Family Show so that was a national show and then we also did the Today show so we have been on National television I think 6 or 7 times September of 2012 so that is less than a year we have been on that much so it has been really cool for Independent artists and that doesn’t happen a lot. We have been so blessed you know?
Q Yeah, definitely and you have a very loyal fan base. They are very supportive and they are there for you and everything. So, how many songs are on the CD?
A There are six.
Q Oh, so you did a 6-pack?
A Ah hah. You are the first one who has noticed that.
Q Yeah. That’s what that is called. That is a 6-pack. That is the way everybody is going. It is kind of more affordable and it only makes sense with what it cost to go into the studio.
A Yeah it does. It is so expensive. A lot of people don’t realize how expensive it is if you want to do a really top notch, we didn’t’ want to do a halfway thing. We wanted to give it the very best we had so that is all we could afford to do was 6. We sat together with some really great songwriters and put our minds together and Krystal and I and my son Aaron wrote 3 of them and then the other ones we wrote with co-writers that joined us. That was pretty cool.
Q The CD is going to be available on all the usual online outlets?
A You can get them at iTunes, Amazon, and our website. If you order directly from our website you will get it autographed if you want it autographed.
Q Is your husband and your son in your band?
A Yes. My son writes with us and he is an incredible guitar player. My husband is our drummer.
Q The CD is going to be released tomorrow.
A Tonight at midnight it should be available on iTunes and the physical CD will be in our hands tomorrow.
Q That is wonderful. Congratulation Alison, have a great weekend. I know you are heading up to Ohio. I will be sure to tell everybody that they need to check out 2 Steel Girls and Train Wreck.
